Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo is preparing to welcome 1.2 million tourists during the upcoming Holy Week holiday period, according to state tourism officials. The influx is expected to surpass last year’s figures and maintain hotel occupancy rates above 80%.

Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Quintana Roo’s Tourism Secretary, explained that the high visitor numbers will help sustain strong occupancy levels. “Holy Week has high expectations, potentially exceeding one million tourists, and we may surpass last year’s numbers,” Cueto said. “We will work to ensure that those who visit us have the best possible experience.”

He noted that the Mexican Caribbean has already been a national reference point this year, hosting major sporting events and conventions that keep the destination top-of-mind for travelers. This momentum is expected to extend beyond the two-week Holy Week break, which runs from March 27 to April 10 due to school calendar scheduling.

Nationally, Mexico’s federal Tourism Ministry anticipates 4.3 million tourists will visit the country’s main destinations during the period, generating an estimated economic impact of 55.89 billion pesos from hotel stays alone.

While official estimates project beach destinations like the Riviera Maya at 78.5% occupancy, followed by Puerto Vallarta at 78.2%, Los Cabos at 77.9%, and Cancún at 75.1%, the Mexican Caribbean is already reporting occupancy rates approaching 90% as of last week.

The latest report from the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association shows Cancún’s hotel zone at 87.9% occupancy as of March 19. Puerto Morelos had reached 82%, while Isla Mujeres’ continental zone registered 85%.

If expectations are met, Quintana Roo would capture just over a quarter of the 4 million tourists expected to travel throughout Mexico during the holiday period.
