Cancún, Quintana Roo — Starting May 1, 2025, residents of certain Mexican states will begin receiving the Federal Electricity Commission’s (CFE) summer heat subsidy. However, Quintana Roo has once again been excluded from the list of beneficiaries.

The high-consumption 1B tariff, which applies to many households in the state, is not eligible for the program. The subsidy, commonly referred to as the "summer tariff," is reserved for domestic use and does not cover high-consumption loads.

Limited Eligibility for Extreme Climate Zones

This year, the subsidy will only apply to residents of Nayarit, Baja California, Sonora, and Sinaloa. The program aims to alleviate the economic impact of increased energy consumption during the hottest months of the year, when air conditioning, fans, and cooling systems drive up electricity usage.

The CFE’s strategy, supported by Mexico’s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), involves implementing lower electricity rates in regions with extreme and prolonged heat.

Quintana Roo’s Exclusion Despite High Temperatures

Despite intense heat in Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Chetumal, and Playa del Carmen, only users registered under tariffs 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F, or similar categories—designated for extreme climates—are eligible for the subsidy.

The duration of the subsidy varies between four and six months, depending on the state, beginning in May and extending through September or even October in extreme cases like Sonora or Baja California.

How to Check Eligibility

Residents can verify whether their electricity bill reflects the subsidy by reviewing their monthly statement through the CFE’s digital platforms. These documents specify the applied tariff and subsidy periods.

The exclusion leaves Quintana Roo residents without relief from rising energy costs during peak summer months, despite the region’s consistently high temperatures.
