Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo’s 12 tourist destinations are preparing for a major influx of visitors as Holy Week officially begins, with projections exceeding 1.2 million tourists and hotel occupancy surpassing 82%, Governor Mara Lezama announced.
During her weekly program “La Voz del Pueblo,” Lezama said the holiday period is expected to generate over $1 billion in economic activity for the Mexican Caribbean region, which she described as “the World Capital of Vacations.” She urged residents to speak positively about local destinations to protect tourism, which supports thousands of families.
“We want the economic benefits to reach all Quintana Roo residents—the workers, gardeners, housekeepers, cooks, bartenders, pool attendants, and everyone who helps create a pleasant experience for tourists,” Lezama stated, adding that the “Safe Vacations” security operation is being launched.
The governor also highlighted that Quintana Roo is strengthening its international profile ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Portugal scheduled to train at Mayakobá before its match against Mexico, and Uruguay setting up a base camp in the state. She noted that Fan Fest events have been secured for destinations including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Bacalar, and Chetumal.
Lezama emphasized efforts to promote women’s inclusion in soccer, pointing to the national “Mujeres Libres” tournament for women over 18 as part of a strategy led by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The holiday period will also feature sports and tourism events like skating competitions in Playa del Carmen and an air show in Tulum in April.
Weather warnings were issued due to a low-pressure channel expected to bring rain and wind gusts of 40–50 km/h through Sunday. Lezama advised the public to take precautions and avoid littering to prevent flooding.
On security, the governor warned of an increase in virtual extortion through fraudulent chats and links, urging people to report such crimes via 089 or 911. She noted that Quintana Roo has a new law allowing authorities to prosecute these offenses proactively.
