Cancún, QRoo — The state of Quintana Roo has added another 2,000 new hotel rooms, bringing its total to nearly 138,000 and solidifying its position as the destination with the second-largest tourist lodging infrastructure in the world, trailing only behind Las Vegas.
This data comes from the weekly report issued by the Quintana Roo Secretariat of Tourism. According to the report, as of July of this year, the state had 135,961 rooms. By August, that number had increased to 137,937, representing an addition of 1,976 units.
This signifies a growth of 10.8 percent since August 2022, when the state had 124,463 hotel rooms. Since that time, 13,474 new rooms have been constructed, primarily in the northern part of the state.
If this pace continues, the state could surpass 150,000 rooms within the next five years and reach parity with Las Vegas.
This increase of 2,000 rooms coincides with a recent report by the firm CBRE, which indicated that 2,280 new hotel rooms opened across the entire country in the first half of the year. Of these, 1,715 (75 percent) were in Cancún, another 355 (16 percent) in the Riviera Maya, and 140 (6 percent) more in the Riviera Nayarit.
This means that Cancún and the Riviera Maya together accounted for 91 percent of all new hotel rooms opened in the country during the first half of 2025.
CBRE also anticipates that during the second half of 2025, more than 3,900 new rooms will begin operations in Mexico. Furthermore, Cancún, the Riviera Maya, and Los Cabos currently have more than 5,000 rooms under construction, which could enter the market between 2025 and 2027.
In the case of Quintana Roo, for the continental zone of Isla Mujeres alone, 25,000 new rooms are projected. Of these, 11,000 have already been inaugurated, leaving 14,000 more rooms yet to be developed in this area. This indicates that the northern zone of Quintana Roo exceeds CBRE's projections.
Given the growth rate Quintana Roo has registered over the last three years, the head of the Quintana Roo Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur), Bernardo Cueto Riestra, has stated that the state is on track to match Las Vegas in terms of the number of hotel rooms within the next five years.
