Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Local families in Puerto Morelos have raised concerns over municipal authorities’ alleged plans to sell a coastal property where a primary school has operated for years, citing its high real estate value. The controversy centers around the secondary school Primero de Junio, located between Rafael E. Melgar Street and the beach near a pier.
Allegations of Institutional Neglect and Declining Enrollment
According to reports from Quintana Roo media outlets, parents have accused Governor Mara Lezama and Mayor Blanca Merari of attempting to close the school to sell the land for tourism or real estate development. Families claim the school has faced institutional neglect, with a deliberate reduction in student admissions to justify its eventual closure.
In early June, Governor Lezama visited another school in Puerto Morelos, the Mario Molina Pasquel secondary school, where students requested support for computer lab renovations. However, no mention was made of the Primero de Junio school in the official press release from that visit.
Government Denies Closure Plans
On July 30, the Quintana Roo Secretary of Education issued a statement addressing public concerns, denying rumors of the school’s closure. “This information is completely false,” the statement read. “On the contrary, this department intends to invest in the rehabilitation of the school for the benefit of Puerto Morelos students.”
Founded in 1973, the Primero de Junio school frequently conducts beach-related activities, biodiversity studies, and coastal dune reforestation projects with specialized organizations. As of July 31, the school administration has not independently commented on the alleged closure attempts or the promised government investment.
