Cancún, Mexico — Residents of Cancún do not stop complaining about public transportation, but when the time came to voice their opinions in a consultation organized by the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo), almost no one showed up.
Of the 11 modules installed in domes, parks, and even in front of the Municipal Palace, very few people approached. Several of those who did arrive commented that they did not even know this consultation existed and only found out because they saw the table as they passed by.
Other neighbors pointed out that the publicity for the event was terrible, which explains why no one found out in time. As if that were not enough, the rain that fell during the event also discouraged several who had intended to participate.
The idea was for citizens to be able to give their opinions on the quality of public transportation, one of the most headache-inducing topics in Cancún. But in the end, between the lack of promotion and the weather, the consultation saw almost no participation.
Imoveqroo reminded the public that it is still possible to give opinions virtually by scanning a QR code. According to the institute, this expands the opportunity for people to give their point of view without needing to leave their homes.
Even so, many Cancún residents say they are tired of this type of exercise because they feel their opinions are never taken into account. That apathy was also reflected in what happened this Sunday: a topic that matters a lot, but with very little citizen response.
