Cancún, Mexico — In an effort to preserve marine biodiversity and protect the ecosystems of the Mesoamerican Reef, the Benito Juárez City Council, in collaboration with Aquaworld Dive Center (ADC), organized a conservation event in the Punta Nizúc Polygon within the National Park. The initiative marked a significant milestone in raising public awareness and fostering citizen participation in environmental efforts.
Government and Private Sector Unite for Marine Preservation
Fernando Haro Salinas, Director General of Ecology, emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the government and private sector to promote environmental consciousness and safeguard local ecosystems. Haro Salinas highlighted the reef’s critical role not only in marine life but also in mitigating coastal erosion and addressing extreme weather events threatening the region.
Jorge García Treviño, ADC’s marina quality coordinator, noted that while underwater cleanups are routine for the organization, this was the first time citizens and authorities were invited to actively participate in preserving these natural spaces.
Volunteers Join Forces for Cleanup Efforts
Dozens of volunteers participated in the cleanup, diving into crystal-clear waters to remove debris from both the seabed and surface. Although the collected waste did not amount to large volumes, the materials recovered were primarily lightweight, including plastic bags and other small debris. Certified divers ensured the safety and efficiency of the operation.
Strengthening Sustainable Tourism
The initiative underscores the importance of maintaining Cancún’s appeal as a tourist destination while preserving its coastal ecosystems. The Benito Juárez City Council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting marine environments and promoting sustainable tourism in the region.
