Progreso, Yucatan — The coastal town of Progreso will host its second annual Coconut Festival this Saturday, March 28, transforming its waterfront into a celebration of local flavors, crafts, and culture.
The event will run from noon to 8 p.m. on the Malecón Tradicional, between streets 66 and 68, offering visitors a chance to sample coconut-inspired delicacies while enjoying sea breezes and family-friendly activities.
Organizers aim to promote local products and boost tourism in this Yucatan port town, which holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest pier at 8 kilometers. The festival will feature coconut-based dishes, drinks, and artisanal goods from local entrepreneurs and nearby communities.
Attendees can expect traditional treats like coconut pie, candies, cocadas (coconut sweets), artisanal ice creams, refreshing beverages, and coconut cream products. Restaurateurs, artisans, and entrepreneurs will showcase their creations, highlighting the region’s culinary heritage.
The festival will also include live music, dance performances, and interactive activities designed to appeal to all ages. Progreso, located 36 kilometers from the state capital Mérida, is known for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant atmosphere with shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
For nature enthusiasts, the area offers opportunities to spot manatees and flamingos in nearby reserves, along with canoe and kayak excursions. Progreso has earned the Blue Flag recognition for meeting strict environmental standards in water quality and sustainable management.
Visitors can explore the Mercado Francisco I. Madero in the town center for local food and crafts, or visit the nearby Casa de Cultura. The most common route to Progreso is from Mérida’s main Tren Maya station, with travel times of about 45 minutes without traffic.
