Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum led a flag-presentation ceremony Monday for Mexico’s national soccer team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to players and executives of the Mexican Football Federation, Sheinbaum entrusted them with the national flag, urging them to represent the country with patriotism.

“I entrust you with this flag, which symbolizes our independence, our people, and the integrity of our territory,” the president said.

The ceremony is part of preparations for Mexico’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Mexico will play its opening match against South Africa on Thursday, June 11, at the Estadio Ciudad de México. The venue will become the first stadium to host three World Cup opening matches.

The flag presentation is a traditional protocol in which the head of state entrusts national representatives with carrying the country’s colors at international competitions.
