President Sheinbaum and Salma Hayek to Announce Film and TV Incentives for Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum and actress Salma Hayek will announce new incentives for Mexico's film and television industry

Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum will announce new incentives for Mexico’s film and television industry alongside actress Salma Hayek this Sunday, the president revealed during her Friday morning press conference at the National Palace.

Sheinbaum said Hayek, who has been advocating for production incentives, will join her for the announcement on February 15. The president acknowledged that while many in the industry have long requested such measures, Hayek’s personal advocacy played a significant role.

“Salma Hayek told us it would be very important to implement these incentives because they exist in many countries around the world,” Sheinbaum said, adding that this should not be misinterpreted as special treatment.

The president highlighted Hayek’s international profile and her defense of Mexican citizens abroad, noting that the actress is currently filming another movie with locations in Veracruz.

“We decided to invite her because it’s also recognition that she insisted so much on this,” Sheinbaum said. “And it’s recognition of what she represents.”

The incentives will support both film and television production in Mexico and help promote the country internationally. A commission will determine how the incentives will be distributed to encourage diverse cinematic productions.

Sheinbaum cited Hayek’s 2002 film “Frida” as an example of cinema’s cultural impact, noting that the movie helped establish Frida Kahlo as a global icon.
