TULUM, Quintana Roo — President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has announced that the federal government is investigating complaints regarding access to beaches in the area of Tulum's El Jaguar Park. The president stated that issues related to signage need to be addressed.
The Mexican head of state explained that she has instructed the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, to assist in handling the matter to determine what is occurring and to give the issue due attention.
"She spoke yesterday, in fact, with several hotel owners in Tulum. We must first verify if what social media says is true and then look specifically at the issue of El Jaguar Park," said the president, who also indicated that the intention of her administration is for the entire population to be able to visit this part of Quintana Roo.
What is Happening in Tulum?
According to what has been published on social media, hotel occupancy in the municipality has been significantly reduced during the low season. Some content creators suggest this is due to a lack of access to the municipality's beaches.
They highlight in various video clips that beach clubs and hotels charged excessive fees for years to allow passage to the region's coasts, which allegedly drove tourism away. The opening of El Jaguar Park is said to have brought more complications to the area.
However, the Tulum government has addressed these complaints and has held various meetings with the hotel sector to find solutions that allow passage through these spaces.
Is There Access to Tulum's Beaches?
According to Mayor Diego Castañón, at least 25 access points to the entity's beaches have been successfully implemented through hotels and beach houses in the area. This was achieved through dialogue with business owners, who supported the measure.
This has eliminated all types of charges, cover fees, or dues that were previously required for people to enter these spaces. Tourists and locals can now pass through these businesses without paying a single peso.
In addition to this, the local government is undertaking various efforts to improve the experience and access to protected areas and beaches. One of the most recent is an initiative that seeks to allow people to enter these spaces for free at least once a week and on holidays.
This would not only guarantee people's access to the coasts but would also allow free access to spaces like El Jaguar Park for Mexicans under certain conditions. Mayor Castañón stated, "Nothing identifies us as much as the sea, and we cannot allow it to be closed off for a select few."
