Puerto Aventuras, Mexico — Following repeated violations of the Puerto Aventuras Marina regulations and concerns over public safety, the Port Authority of Playa del Carmen has taken steps to regulate the use of waverunners, or personal watercraft, in the area.

New Measures Implemented After Safety Violations

The decision comes after an incident last Sunday afternoon, when three minors—two of whom were not wearing life jackets—were spotted operating waverunners in the Marina Norte channel. These channels are designated exclusively for yacht traffic, and swimming is also prohibited in the area. Despite these restrictions, individuals have continued to disregard the rules, particularly in recent weeks as the zone has been affected by an influx of sargassum seaweed.

The Port Authority issued an official notice to owners of such watercraft, requiring them to register their vehicles. Additionally, the Puerto Aventuras Marina distributed a document outlining new regulations that must be followed.

Key Provisions of the New Regulations

Among the new rules is a prohibition on minors operating waverunners unless accompanied by an adult. The Marina emphasized that the water areas of Marinas Sur and Norte are federally regulated and concessioned to the Puerto Aventuras Trust, granting them the authority to remove any vessels that fail to meet legal requirements or violate established guidelines.

The Marina warned that failure to comply with these regulations could result in enforcement actions, stressing that the primary goal is to prevent accidents.

A video shared on Twitter further highlighted the Port Authority’s efforts to enforce these measures.

The Marina reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety and order in the federally regulated waters under its jurisdiction.
