Cancún, Quintana Roo — Police rescued five Colombian women who were being held against their will in a locked house in Cancún on Monday afternoon, authorities announced.

The operation took place at a residence on Bolonchen Street, number 69, in the Sol del Mayab neighborhood within the city’s Supermanzana 56 district. Municipal police officers found the home completely sealed upon arrival.

Neighbors alerted authorities that several women were locked inside, prompting police to call for backup. With additional units on scene, officers rescued the five women and detained a man who was reportedly armed.

Witnesses said the victims were kept under lock and key during the day and only taken out at night in luxury vehicles, returning in the early morning hours. This has led investigators to suspect they were victims of human trafficking.

Paramedics from the Rescue and Emergency Medical Squad (Erum) provided first aid at the scene before transporting the women to a hospital for a full medical evaluation.

The victims confirmed they had been held against their will and reported that their captors had confiscated their passports. The rescue was triggered after one of the women managed to call 911 to report her situation.

Although neighbors claimed armed individuals were hiding in a neighboring house, authorities found no one else after a search.

Police handed the detained man over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine his legal status, while the property was secured by officials.
