Tepich-Chumpon Highway, Quintana Roo — A police officer was killed and another injured after an armed group ambushed a joint security patrol on a state highway early Sunday morning.
The attack occurred on the Tepich-Chumpon highway, in the Tepich-San Ramon section, as officers from a multi-agency task force were conducting routine security patrols. The task force included state police, municipal police, the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the Mexican Navy.
Two state police officers from the Quintana Roo Citizen Security Department were wounded in the assault. Their colleagues provided first aid and rushed them to a general hospital for emergency medical treatment. One of the officers later died from his injuries.
The armed assailants fled the scene, and their whereabouts remain unknown. Authorities have launched a major operation in the area, deploying dozens of state and federal police patrols and personnel in an attempt to locate and apprehend those responsible.
