Playa del Carmen Secures $86 Million to Address Sargassum Season in 2026

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen has secured 86 million pesos to address the sargassum seaweed season in 2026, officials announced.

Municipal treasurer Javier Regalado Hendricks said the funds consist of 46 million pesos from the Environmental Sanitation Fee and a 40 million peso disaster fund that can be activated if needed.

He explained that while some sargassum arrivals have occurred in early 2026 along the Riviera Maya, they haven’t been significant or persistent so far. Cleaning efforts have focused on specific areas requiring intervention.

“The resources allocated for the macroalgae are guaranteed,” Regalado Hendricks stated, noting that the 46 million pesos from the Environmental Sanitation Fee depends directly on tourism activity and hotel occupancy.

The municipal administration maintains coordination with Environment and Public Services departments to respond immediately to any potential increase in sargassum arrivals, particularly considering 2025’s experience when sargassum behavior created financial and operational pressure on various sectors of the destination.

Regalado Hendricks added that the hotel sector continues participating in financing these actions through this mechanism, which remains the primary funding source for sargassum management in the municipality.

Regarding tourism-related income, he said the municipality maintains favorable expectations due to hotel occupancy rates in the Riviera Maya, currently ranging between 78 and 80 percent, which strengthens collection of the Environmental Sanitation Fee.

This condition allows maintaining the planned budget without adjustments, since sanitation income depends directly on visitor flow and tourist stays in the destination.

The municipal treasurer noted that sargassum arrivals have not only environmental implications but also budgetary ones, since collection, transport, and final disposal require ongoing resources during months of greater macroalgae presence.

He indicated that while no critical situation has been observed on municipal beaches through the first quarter, the administration maintains financial provisions to respond if algae behavior changes in coming weeks, as typically occurs with rising spring temperatures.

The municipality maintains active cleaning brigades and immediate response capacity on central beaches and other coastal areas where historically greater sargassum arrivals concentrate.

Playa del Carmen plans to sustain containment and cleaning actions throughout 2026 without affecting other municipal operational spending areas, while monitoring the season’s behavior in coordination with environmental authorities and the tourism sector.
