Playa del Carmen Celebrates 32 Years of Growth & Unity

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Playa del Carmen marked its 32nd anniversary as a municipality with a solemn public session, celebrating its evolution from the ancient Mayan port of Xaman-Ha to one of Mexico’s most prominent tourist destinations. The event, held at the Teatro de la Ciudad "Xaman-Ha," was attended by over 700 guests, including Governor Mara Lezama, municipal president Estefanía Mercado, and other dignitaries.

A Legacy of Identity and Progress

Municipal President Estefanía Mercado opened the ceremony by reflecting on Playa del Carmen’s origins and its growth into a global destination. “Playa del Carmen is not a place where one is born; it is a place chosen with the heart,” she said. “Being a ‘playense’ is a way of life—an identity honored daily with the joy of feeling at home.”

Mercado highlighted the municipality’s achievements, including its status as the destination with the highest per-capita investment in public safety in Mexico. She also emphasized urban renewal projects, such as the revitalization of public spaces with a new visual identity centered on the color sand, symbolizing local pride.

Key Projects and Economic Shifts

Among ongoing initiatives, Mercado noted the reactivation of the Polifórum, parks, and sports facilities; the development of a new city brand; and a vibrant cultural agenda positioning Playa del Carmen as Quintana Roo’s entertainment capital.

She also outlined a shift in tourism strategy, moving from an “All Inclusive” model to a “Todos Incluidos” (Everyone Included) approach aimed at ensuring local artisans, producers, and workers benefit from the industry. “Governing with love for the people truly transforms realities,” Mercado said, thanking Governor Lezama for her support.

Governor Lezama’s Commitment to Development

Governor Mara Lezama reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to Playa del Carmen’s growth, citing major investments in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. These include:

• 42 million pesos to strengthen medical facilities.
• 223 million pesos for educational infrastructure.
• 54 million pesos for road improvements and public spaces.

“Every peso invested is not a favor from the government—it’s an obligation. The money belongs to the people and must return to them as social justice,” Lezama stated. She also acknowledged federal support from President Claudia Sheinbaum in advancing Quintana Roo’s development.

A Message of Unity from a Founding Family Descendant

Cecilio Puc Sansores, a descendant of one of Playa del Carmen’s founding families, delivered an emotional address celebrating the municipality’s unity and inclusivity. “The future is in our hands. When we stand together, no dream is out of reach,” he said, praising current leaders for prioritizing community-centered policies.

Honoring History and Looking Ahead

The ceremony included tributes to Playa del Carmen’s early settlers, such as José Quiam Chan and Juanita López Baas, and featured performances of the Quintana Roo and Mexican national anthems. Attendees included former governors, ex-mayors, state and federal legislators, and the “Guardians of the City,” a local civic group.

As Playa del Carmen enters its 33rd year, the event underscored its resilience, cultural richness, and commitment to inclusive growth—a vision shared by its leaders and residents alike.
