PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX — Mayor Estefanía Mercado ranks Playa del Carmen as the fourth safest municipality in Mexico, according to the most recent national evaluation of female mayors conducted by the polling firm Rubrum in September 2025. The results consolidate the municipality's status as one of the safest in the country under Mercado's leadership.
This outcome is attributed to a historic investment in patrols, helicopters, technology, and the professionalization of the Municipal Police. The ranking also reflects a municipal strategy focused on peacebuilding and maintaining closeness to citizens.
The overall results for Playa del Carmen in the Rubrum evaluation are as follows:
- Safety: Fourth place nationwide in perceived safety, with a score of 5.65.
- Public Services: Fifth place nationwide, with a score of 5.81. Achievements cited include the restoration of 83 parks, the collection of more than 200,000 tons of trash, and the renovation of 6,282 streetlights.
- Proximity: Seventh place nationwide, with a score of 5.16, a result of direct and ongoing contact with citizens.
- Overall Performance: Sixth place nationwide, with a score of 6.70, positioning Playa del Carmen as a benchmark for municipal management in Mexico.
With these results, Playa del Carmen has established itself as a model municipality nationwide. The data demonstrates that safety, quality public services, and closeness to the people are the foundation for a profound transformation.
