Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police officers in Playa del Carmen thwarted a virtual extortion attempt against a local resident while they were responding to a traffic accident on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. in the Villamar I neighborhood. A citizen approached officers who were handling a vehicle collision at the intersection of Avenida 28 de Julio and Arco Vial, seeking help because he was on a call with an individual demanding a large sum of money in exchange for not harming him or his family members.
Activating security protocols for such cases, the police officers assisted the citizen, accompanied him to his home, and verified that his family was safe. This confirmed the call was a virtual extortion attempt, a crime that has intensified in recent months.
Authorities note that these types of calls often originate from detention centers, where inmates or prisoners, in collusion with facility staff, operate with impunity. They urge the public to remain calm and seek help from authorities through the 911 emergency line.
