Playa del Carmen Officials Tour Local Farms to Boost Sustainable Production

Municipal officials from Playa del Carmen touring a local farm

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal officials toured several local farms this week as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the region’s agricultural and fisheries sectors through training, distribution support, and promotion of a circular economy.

The visits, led by Economic Development Secretary Estefanía Hernández and Municipal Agricultural and Fisheries Director Alejandro López Acuña, took place in the Santa Cecilia II area. Officials inspected three ranches to assess production methods and discuss opportunities for expanding local distribution.

At “El Hidalgo” ranch, operated by Ignacia Ramos and Javier González Velázquez, officials noted an annual tilapia production of 1.2 tons, described as high-quality and ready for sale to households, hotels, and restaurants. The ranch also raises and sells sheep and poultry.

“Los Vergara” ranch, run by Sergio Vergara and his team, employs a circular economy model that has enabled sustainable production of pigs, sheep, cattle, chickens, and nutritionally rich eggs suitable for broader local distribution.

At “Alma Vieja” ranch, headed by Martín Ávila, officials observed poultry, pork, and cattle production. The site produces approximately 40,000 eggs per month, presenting a significant opportunity to expand distribution to homes and businesses in coordination with municipal strategies.

Secretary Hernández emphasized that these operations create tangible opportunities for added value, job creation, and stronger household incomes in rural communities, contributing to more balanced development across the municipality.

Producers expressed appreciation for the municipal government’s direct engagement and highlighted the need for continued public policies addressing infrastructure, market access, and technology adoption to enhance product competitiveness.
