Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado Tests Positive for Influenza

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced Saturday that she tested positive for influenza and will minimize in-person activities in the coming days.

In a brief video posted on social media, the mayor said she is following medical recommendations for recovery. She indicated she will rest but continue working and monitoring priority municipal matters virtually in coordination with her team.

“We will continue working for our city through virtual meetings and in permanent coordination with the entire team. Playa del Carmen does not stop,” she declared.

The mayor thanked supporters and reiterated her commitment to residents, assuring that municipal administration will continue operating normally.

She also thanked everyone making the city’s carnival activities possible. “Thanks to the entire team that is delivering effort and heart in every Carnival activity, and to each participant who makes it possible. I will be very, very attentive to everything that happens in our city,” she concluded.

According to the weekly report from the Special Epidemiological Surveillance System, as of week 5, the state has recorded 83 influenza cases.

The entities with the highest case confirmations are Mexico City (22.9%), State of Mexico (10.1%), Nuevo León (9.8%), Puebla (7.2%), and Yucatán (5.8%).

Among variants of the disease, H1N1 has hit these entities hardest, accounting for 82.2% of diagnosed cases.

Health authorities reported that the seasonal influenza vaccine is free and available at health centers and public hospitals. Vaccination is one of the most effective measures to reduce serious complications and mortality associated with the disease.
