Playa del Carmen Launches Free Jarana Yucateca Dance Classes for Youth

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen announced free Jarana Yucateca dance classes for young people, starting April 8, 2026, as part of an initiative to preserve cultural traditions and strengthen community ties.

The Playa del Carmen Youth Institute will run the program, which aims to create a space where participants can connect with their cultural roots, develop artistic skills, and build community through this emblematic traditional dance from southeastern Mexico.

Officials emphasized that the activity promotes not only dance learning but also pride in the region’s cultural heritage, while encouraging exercise, social interaction, and community building among youth.

Class Schedule and Location

The program will begin on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and will be held three days per week:

  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
  • 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Classes will take place at the Oval Hall in La Gran Plaza, located on Avenida CTM between Avenida 115 and Avenida 125.

No Experience Required

The classes are open to young people with no prior experience. Anyone interested in learning the steps of jarana can join the group.

For the best experience, participants are recommended to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement
  • Folkloric shoes or wooden-heeled shoes for practicing traditional footwork
  • A thermos or water bottle to stay hydrated during sessions
  • A positive attitude and willingness to have fun, learn, and make new friends
