Playa del Carmen, Mexico — With a firm commitment to strengthening cultural identity and economic development in the municipality, the Secretary of Tourism, Estefanía Hernández, and the Secretary of Development and Investment Attraction, Antón Bojórquez, representing Mayor Estefanía Mercado, presided over the official presentation of products crafted by local artisans under the “Ciudad de Playa del Carmen” brand at the Art Gallery of the Old Palace.

A Platform for Artisans and Economic Growth

In her remarks, the Tourism Secretary emphasized that sharing the space with 27 artisans and producers registered under the “Ciudad de Playa del Carmen” brand provides an opportunity to humanize tourism and generate direct benefits for local families.

“Our ‘Ciudad de Playa del Carmen’ brand is much more than a logo; it represents the identity of our families and our community. We want Playa del Carmen to be recognized internationally not only for its natural beauty but also for the quality and originality of what is produced here,” she stated.

Antón Bojórquez, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, praised the work of rural producers in the municipality.

“Playa del Carmen is more than just sun, sand, and sea. We are a multicultural destination, home to over a hundred nationalities and representatives from all 32 states of Mexico. This diversity is reflected in the richness and variety of the products presented today by our artisan friends,” he said.

Bojórquez noted that since the beginning of Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s administration, efforts have been made to transition from a model of limited inclusion to one of “everyone included,” where culture, identity, and economic development intersect. He reiterated the municipal government’s commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs as strategic allies in promoting Playa del Carmen nationally and internationally.

A Collaborative Effort

The event, organized by the Municipal Tourism Secretariat in coordination with Economic Development, brought together over 70 attendees, including authorities, artisans, and representatives from the tourism and commercial sectors. The exhibition featured culturally significant products such as textiles, food, natural cosmetics, folk art, and design elements—all crafted by local entrepreneurs who can now market their brands under the “Ciudad de Playa del Carmen” label.

This initiative is part of the Shared Prosperity pillar of the 2024–2027 Municipal Development Plan, aiming to strengthen the local economy, promote responsible consumption, and position Playa del Carmen as an innovative, competitive, and culturally vibrant municipality.

Among the participants were Laura Acosta Quian, head of the “Hecho en Playa” program, and Mariana Pérez Hernández, Director of Tourism Operations and Training, who oversees the project’s logistics. Also present were Deyanira Martínez, Secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation; chef Roberto Reta of Pasión de Cacao; and Erika Castillo Meléndez of the brand Tía Nata. Council members Xelhá Dehesa, Renán Santos, and Saúl Barbosa also attended.

Products bearing the “Hecho en Playa del Carmen” seal are available for purchase from Friday to Sunday evenings at stands located in Plaza 28 de Julio.
