Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents and activists in the Villas del Sol neighborhood have launched a humanitarian aid drive to support Cuba, collecting non-perishable food, hygiene items, and medicine at a local cultural center.
The collection point is at Cafebrería Zapatista, located near the fire station in the first park of the subdivision. Ray Uribe, who manages the self-managed cultural center, said they will accept basic supplies through February 20.
The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Uribe explained that Cuba faces a critical situation due to the economic blockade imposed by the United States over six decades ago, which has worsened with energy restrictions affecting hospitals, schools, airports, and transportation infrastructure.
“The initiative aims to address a humanitarian crisis impacting millions of people,” Uribe said.
Organizers said they will coordinate with the national campaign promoted by Morena to ensure the aid reaches its destination.
Uribe noted that Mexico has historically shown solidarity with other Latin American peoples and emphasized the importance of regional unity amid international political uncertainty.
The campaign launch in Villas del Sol is significant as it is the largest and fastest-growing residential development in Playa del Carmen. Cafebrería Zapatista was established there to offer cultural, social, and gastronomic activities to the community.
Through this effort, neighbors and activists hope to gather as many supplies as possible before the drive concludes.
