Mexico’s Fake Schools Trap Students With Worthless Degrees

Cancún, Mexico — Cases continue to emerge in Cancún involving educational institutions that fail to deliver valid titles or certificates to students who have completed their academic programs. According to recent reports, more than one hundred young people are waiting to receive the documentation that certifies their studies, after having spent two or three years completing a technical or professional degree.

The complaints indicate that some schools, despite operating with federal permits, lack the Reconocimiento de Validez Oficial de Estudios (RVOE), a document that guarantees academic programs meet the required standards for levels such as bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees. Without this validation, the issued titles are not officially recognized.

One of the institutions involved, whose name has been withheld due to an ongoing legal process, reportedly removed its advertising following complaints but continues to offer educational services.

The affected young people report that, in addition to the time invested, their families made significant financial expenditures with the expectation of receiving a document that would validate their education.

Organizations within the educational sector have reiterated the importance of verifying the validity of any academic program beforehand and have insisted on the need to strengthen oversight mechanisms to prevent more students from facing similar situations.

Furthermore, they warned that those affected could take several more years to regularize their situation if they decide to continue their studies at institutions with official recognition.
