Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A gray pickup truck rolled over Friday afternoon on Federal Highway 307 in the stretch between Cancún and Puerto Morelos after the driver lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.
According to initial reports, the truck was traveling faster than the posted speed limit. The driver failed to account for the condition of the asphalt or the volume of traffic in the area, causing the vehicle to veer off its lane and slam into the central median dividing the highway’s lanes.
The pickup then struck the vegetation and trees along the median and rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof, partially blocking traffic and alarming drivers passing through the area at the time.
Despite the violent nature of the crash and the heavy material damage to the vehicle, the driver — the truck’s only occupant — managed to get out on his own and was unhurt. He did not require transport to a hospital.
Minutes after the crash was reported to emergency services, Red Cross paramedics and National Guard officers assigned to the highway division arrived at the scene. They closed off the affected lane with warning markers to prevent a second crash or a pedestrian being struck, given the heavy flow of vehicles.
The rescue work and the complex task of righting the wrecked pickup severely disrupted traffic. A long backup formed in the northbound direction toward Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos and lasted about two hours, leaving long lines of stranded cars.
A heavy-duty tow truck later arrived to haul the vehicle to the official impound lot. Traffic officers spoke with the driver to determine responsibility and complete the required paperwork.
