Merida, Yucatan — A 50-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon while undergoing surgery at a private clinic in northern Merida, prompting an investigation by the State Prosecutor’s Office after family members alleged possible medical irregularities.

The patient entered the Opera Centro de Cirugia Ambulatoria, located in the Residencial Camara de Comercio neighborhood, for a procedure to treat a fistula in the rectal area. During the operation or in the immediate recovery period, he suffered complications that led to his death.

Officers from the Public Security Department, agents from the State Prosecutor’s Office, and personnel from the Forensic Medical Service responded to the clinic to begin proceedings and remove the body.

Family members filed a formal complaint, questioning how they were informed about the patient’s condition and requesting a thorough investigation into what occurred during the surgery. According to unofficial reports, the surgeon and anesthesiologist were no longer at the clinic when authorities arrived.

The State Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation and began collecting testimony, medical records, and other evidence to reconstruct the events. The body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The clinic remained cordoned off for several hours while investigators processed the scene, drawing attention from neighbors and passersby.

The investigation and forensic reports will determine whether the death resulted from a medical complication inherent to the procedure or from possible negligence or omissions in the care provided.
