The Caribbean Regional Chamber of the Federal Administrative Justice Tribunal has ordered the resumption of a trial concerning the tragic death of a six-year-old girl, Aitana. The incident, which took place in June 2023, occurred at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Playa del Carmen and sparked national outrage due to the circumstances surrounding it.

Aitana, who was suffering from a severe case of dengue fever, was being transported in an elevator at the General Hospital of Zone Number 18 of the IMSS. Unfortunately, a mechanical failure in the elevator resulted in a fatal accident, leading to her untimely death.

The Regional Chamber has called for the presence of Aitana's father, Patricio Domínguez Balcázar, to continue with the legal proceedings. Aitana had been admitted to the IMSS hospital in Playa del Carmen on June 8, 2023, displaying symptoms of dengue fever.

On the night of July 10, hospital staff attempted to move Aitana on a stretcher to a different area within the hospital. As they were entering the elevator, with half of her body still outside, the elevator malfunctioned and began to move. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, witnesses, and Aitana's father, they were unable to free her. Emergency rescue teams were called, but it took over half an hour for them to arrive.
