“Environmental Crisis: 7,000+ Sign Petition to Save Laguna Chacmuchuch”

Laguna Chacmuchuch in Quintana Roo is under threat from severe water pollution. As of yesterday, a petition to protect the lagoon had received 7,486 signatures. The lagoon, a protected reserve for the past three decades, is on the brink of an environmental catastrophe.

The "Chacmuchuch River Environmental Monitoring and Education Committee" has highlighted the damage to the primary lagoon body on the North Coast of Quintana Roo, home to diverse marine life. The lagoon's surrounding area has become a dumping ground for leachate, a harmful liquid that seeps from landfills, since the first landfill was installed in 1994. Local residents and activists are urging the federal government to investigate the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for its lack of environmental conservation efforts.

The ongoing pollution in Laguna Chacmuchuch has resulted in an overflow of leachate into the mangroves, leading to continuous contamination of the lagoon. The creators of the documentary "Laguna Chacmuchuch, in quiet ecocide" have brought attention to the significant environmental crisis facing the 12 thousand hectare natural protected area. They stress that the leachate is polluting the lagoon's water and the groundwater table, posing a threat to local wildlife and the health of nearby residents.
