Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has allocated more than 5.5 million square meters (550 hectares) of Banco Chinchorro to the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp). The decision, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, aims to ensure the protection and monitoring of the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, located off the coast of Othón P. Blanco municipality.
Three Key Zones Under Protection
The designated area consists of three zones: Cayo Central, Cayo Norte 1, and Cayo Norte 2. Cayo Central, the largest section, spans over 5 million square meters and already hosts a field station dedicated to conservation efforts.
The station includes dormitory modules, offices, a laboratory, a dining area, storage facilities, and systems for rainwater harvesting and solar energy. Additionally, it features a wooden dock, a radio tower, and other infrastructure to support specialists in monitoring, restoring, and safeguarding the reserve’s ecosystems.
Legal Framework and Enforcement
Semarnat’s action aligns with the 1996 decree that established Banco Chinchorro as a Biosphere Reserve. The agreement stipulates that Conanp may only use the land for environmental purposes. Unauthorized use could result in Semarnat reclaiming the territory.
The document also states that Semarnat reserves the right to modify the area’s boundaries based on new studies or technical updates. All activities within the reserve must comply with existing legislation and secure necessary federal, state, or municipal permits.
"The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, through the General Directorate of Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone and Coastal Environments, will oversee strict compliance with this agreement," the publication concludes.
