In preparation for the upcoming Easter holiday season, local and state authorities, along with residents, have collaborated on a large-scale clean-up of the Xcalak coastline. The Mayor of Othón P. Blanco, Yensunni Martínez Hernández, led the initiative, which saw over 200 public servants, the Naval Secretariat, and the Municipal Police come together to tackle the issue. Their collective efforts resulted in the collection of over 50 tons of sargassum, a persistent environmental problem plaguing the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean.
Mayor Martínez Hernández, alongside community delegate Gilberto Beltrán Yam and sub-delegate Orlando Daniel Batún, emphasized that these efforts are part of the administration's commitment to maintaining a clean and appealing tourist destination for both visitors and locals. "We work hand in hand with the citizens, committed to and passionate about everything we do. Only together can we transform Xcalak and all of Othón P. Blanco," stated Martínez Hernández.
The mayor also expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the initiative, including Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa for her invaluable support in the upkeep and care of the municipality's beaches. The sargassum, a recurring environmental challenge that affects the region annually, poses a constant problem for authorities and tourist service providers. Actions like this clean-up day are crucial in preserving the natural beauty of Xcalak and maintaining its appeal for national and international tourists.
