Playa del Carmen, Mexico — More than 19,000 tons of sargassum have been cleared from the beaches of Playa del Carmen during the current season as part of a coordinated effort involving municipal authorities, the hotel industry, civil society, and federal agencies.
A Collaborative Cleanup Effort
The operation, led by Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado, has utilized specialized machinery, manual brigades, and support from the Mexican Navy to address areas with the highest accumulation of the seaweed along the coast.
"When we work as a team and with love for this land, there is no challenge we cannot face," stated Mayor Mercado, acknowledging the contributions of Zofemat (the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone agency), municipal departments, tourism businesses, and volunteers who made the cleanup possible.
The initiative aims not only to mitigate the impact of the massive sargassum influx but also to preserve the environmental quality of the shoreline, a key asset for the region’s tourism industry.
Large-Scale Cleaning Initiative
On Thursday, local authorities conducted a major cleanup operation at beaches 72, 88, and Punta Esmeralda. Personnel from multiple agencies participated, including the Municipal Secretariat of Public Security, the Office of the Mayor, the Secretariat of Public Services, the Treasury, the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, as well as the DIF (Integrated Family Development System) and the Inter Playa Club.
Mayor Mercado was accompanied by Samantha Álvarez, Secretary of the Environment, and Rafael Lili Madrigal, Director of Zofemat, who both expressed gratitude for the joint efforts to maintain the beaches in optimal condition and protect the natural heritage of Playa del Carmen’s residents.
The ongoing cleanup underscores the community’s commitment to safeguarding its coastal resources amid recurring sargassum arrivals.
