Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The potential entry of a new transportation concession is currently under review by authorities in Playa del Carmen’s municipal government. The proposal, once finalized, will be presented to the city council for approval before an open call for bids is issued.
Municipal Government Evaluates Proposal
Nayeli Molina, Director of Public Transportation, confirmed that the matter has not yet been formally introduced as a council agreement. However, she emphasized that Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio is committed to improving the city’s transportation system for residents.
“Of course, it is being studied, and when the time comes, the open bidding process will be announced with all the necessary legal considerations,” Molina stated.
Existing Operator Under Scrutiny
Regarding the current operator, Tucsa, Molina noted that its fleet of over 80 buses underwent inspections in March. Municipal inspectors are ensuring the company addresses any outstanding issues. While mechanical problems have reportedly been resolved, minor repairs—such as paintwork, glass replacements, and bodywork—remain pending, often due to delays in receiving parts from suppliers.
The municipal government’s focus remains on enhancing mobility options for Playa del Carmen’s residents, with further developments expected as the review progresses.
