Chetumal, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has introduced the Taruk bus, a fully electric vehicle manufactured in Mexico, which will now undergo operational testing as part of the public transportation service project in the state capital of Chetumal.
The Governor of Quintana Roo, alongside Rafael Hernández Kotasek, Director of the Institute of Mobility of Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO), affirmed that dignified public transportation will be implemented, stating that while testing continues, it will become a reality at the start of the year.
How Will Taruk Operate in Chetumal?
This demonstrative unit will conduct operational tests from October 6th to October 11th on the two pilot routes. Governor Lezama explained that the bus is being integrated into the daily operation of the Sian Ka'an and El Caribe routes so that users can board and evaluate it.
Further testing is scheduled for October 10th and 11th on new routes, but these tests will be conducted without passengers on board.
The director of IMOVEQROO added that the goal is to analyze the bus's real-world performance in daily situations, taking into account its technical, operational, and energy efficiency, as well as its economic aspects and the user experience.
What is the Taruk Electric Bus Operating in Chetumal Like?
The bus, which measures 9.5 meters in length and has a capacity for 60 passengers (28 seated), combines a compact urban design with a range of up to 350 kilometers. This range is sufficient to cover complete routes without the need for regular recharging.
Its 100 KW electric motor provides efficient and quiet performance, eliminating polluting emissions during operation and thereby helping to optimize the city's air quality.
Governor Mara Lezama clarified that the Taruk, an electric vehicle designed, manufactured, and patented in Mexico with the assistance of Megaflux, the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt), and the Faculty of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), is not only a step forward in terms of national technological sovereignty but also represents the creation of jobs for Mexican citizens.
She added that the bus features universal accessibility for all, with spaces for wheelchairs. "The objective is for people to have a safe journey to school, to the office, to home," Lezama stated. "It symbolizes social justice, well-being for the people."
