Quintana Roo Launches Solar Program for Rural Communities

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The newly launched Ejido Solar Quintana Roo 2025 program aims to provide solar panels to ejidos and agrarian communities across the state, offering a sustainable solution to combat climate change while boosting local economies. The initiative, spearheaded by the Quintana Roo government through the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment, seeks to facilitate access to technical guidance, training, and support for solar energy projects.

A Push for Clean Energy and Economic Growth

Governor Mara Lezama has prioritized clean energy initiatives during her administration, with Ejido Solar emerging as a key program to promote distributed solar photovoltaic installations. The project is designed to foster economic development in rural areas while incorporating social equity and gender perspectives. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the program also encourages agrarian communities to benefit from the commercialization of electricity.

The program operates under the legal framework of the Law for the Promotion of Energy Efficiency and the Use of Renewable Energy Sources in Quintana Roo, as well as the State Law of Economic Development and Competitiveness. It aligns with the State Plan for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Development.

Key Benefits of the Ejido Solar Program

The government’s published guidelines outline several advantages for participating communities:

• Technical Assistance: Support for developing distributed photovoltaic generation projects (under 500 kWp).
• Feasibility Assessments: Identification of suitable land parcels, preferably at least one hectare in size, impacted by human activity and conducive to solar projects.
• Governance Structures: Assistance in designing governance models tailored to existing or newly formed productive societies within ejidos or agrarian communities.
• Training Programs: Education on system operation, maintenance, regulations, and technical-economic aspects of photovoltaic systems.
• Implementation Support: Guidance in creating action plans, securing financing, and connecting with potential investors to launch solar projects.
