Cozumel, QRoo — A new association of mototaxi drivers affiliated with the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM) was presented this weekend on the island, integrating 56 units into the local transport service.
The organization's promoter, Irwin Batún Alpuche, reported that the units are properly registered with the mobility authority and that their registration dates back to 2023, when they were part of another guild from which they subsequently separated.
Batún Alpuche, who also serves as a public official in the municipal administration, stated that the association seeks to improve service for users and strengthen the formality of the service.
Currently, a total of 380 mototaxis are authorized in Cozumel, although it is estimated that around 600 units are actively circulating on the island. This has generated concern among residents and users, who believe that the quality of service should be prioritized over an increase in the number of vehicles.
