New Biometric CURP ID: What Quintana Roo Must Know

CAPTION

QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — A significant change to official identification in Mexico is scheduled for October 2025, with the introduction of the new Biometric CURP. This document will replace the standard CURP and is designed to enhance citizen data protection and identity security for government procedures.

A Voluntary Process with Mandatory Aspects for Minors

According to information presented by the President of the Republic during a morning press conference in July, the new Biometric CURP will incorporate additional personal data, including fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs, into the standard birth documentation.

The stated objective is for the Mexican government to possess citizens' biometric data to help preserve national security. A secondary aim is to improve investigations into missing persons, as these documents will be linked to an individual's family members.

The processing of the Biometric CURP will not be mandatory for adults in Quintana Roo. However, it will be compulsory for minors. Parents or guardians are urged to complete the procedure for their children as soon as possible, as the process requires the information of the parent, mother, or tutor to link to the child's Biometric CURP. The government has confirmed the procedure is completely free of charge.

Required Documents and Application Process

To obtain the new ID, residents will need to present a specific set of documents. The list of requirements is:

  • An updated birth certificate without errors.
  • A valid official identification, such as a voter ID card (INE) or passport.
  • A traditional CURP validated by the National Population Registry (RENAPO).
  • Proof of address.
  • A valid email address.

The application for the Biometric CURP will be processed at local Civil Registry offices or RENAPO offices. Applicants must schedule an appointment to have their additional data—iris, fingerprints, and photograph—collected. Following the appointment, the document will be sent digitally to the provided email address.

The new Biometric CURP service will become available starting October 16, 2025. The Mexican government has extended an invitation to all citizens in Quintana Roo to undertake the procedure voluntarily so they may use the document for future official transactions.
