Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A total of 175 children and young athletes, along with 10 coaches, participated in the NBA Summer Camp 2025 held at the Poliforum in Playa del Carmen. The event was led by former NBA players Eduardo Nájera and Horacio Llamas, who shared key basketball fundamentals with the attendees.
Legends Mentor the Next Generation
The camp, which will continue on Sunday, June 29, provided young participants with the opportunity to learn from national basketball legends, fostering inspiration and personal growth through sports. The initiative aims to promote peaceful environments in Playa del Carmen by encouraging youth to excel in athletics.
Nájera and Llamas conducted practical training sessions, delivered motivational talks, and facilitated team-building exercises. The experience was described as unforgettable for the young athletes, made possible through the efforts of Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado.
Distinguished Attendees
Mayor Mercado attended the event alongside local legislator Eric Arcila Arjona and Sports Director Alberto López Castro. The camp aligns with Mercado’s vision of inspiring younger generations through the examples of nationally and internationally successful athletes.
Horacio Llamas made history as the first Mexican to debut in the NBA, playing for the Phoenix Suns in 1997. Eduardo Nájera, the second Mexican to reach the league, enjoyed a 12-season career with teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and New Jersey Nets.
The NBA Summer Camp 2025 represents a significant step in nurturing young talent and reinforcing the role of sports in community development.
