Cancún, Quintana Roo — A nautical association is working with investors to establish a new passenger ferry route between Puerto Juárez and Isla Mujeres, aiming to create an alternative to the main crossing that currently handles most tourist traffic.
Ricardo Muleiro López, director of Asociados Náuticos de Quintana Roo, said the goal is to diversify maritime offerings and strengthen nautical activity in the area, particularly from facilities managed by the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo.
He noted that advanced negotiations are underway with investors to bring in a new shipping company to operate from these port terminals, which would expand maritime transport options to the island.
According to Muleiro López, this initiative also aims to reactivate economic activity in Puerto Juárez, where various cooperatives and nautical service providers currently participate in passenger transport.
Local cooperatives view the project optimistically, as they currently capture about 35% of potential passengers crossing to Isla Mujeres. Greater route and operator diversification could strengthen tourist and commercial activity at the port.
