Puerto Morelos, Mexico — A motorcyclist lost his life after colliding with the rear of a personnel transport bus on Federal Highway 307, located between Puerto Morelos and Cancún near the entrance to the Royalton Splash Hotel. The impact caused the bus to catch fire, though fortunately, it was unoccupied at the time.
Details of the Collision
The incident occurred around midday on Thursday when the motorcyclist, identified as Luis Gabriel, was traveling along the highway. At kilometer 332, a bus operated by the company Lipu, en route from Cancún, began crossing the road to enter the Royalton Splash Hotel.
Authorities suspect the motorcyclist attempted to overtake the bus but failed, resulting in a collision with the rear side of the heavy vehicle. The force of the impact ejected Luis Gabriel from his motorcycle, causing him to land on the asphalt and suffer fatal injuries. The motorcycle's fuel tank ruptured upon impact, igniting a fire that quickly engulfed the bus.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The bus driver, assisted by nearby tourist van drivers, made unsuccessful attempts to extinguish the flames. Emergency responders, including firefighters and National Guard personnel, arrived at the scene. Paramedics confirmed the motorcyclist had no vital signs upon their arrival.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which left the bus severely damaged. The National Guard conducted an investigation to determine liability, while personnel from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) of the Cancún Attorney General's Office removed the body for an autopsy to establish the official cause of death.
The victim's identity was later confirmed through social media. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
