Cozumel, Mexico — The Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE) has confirmed the detention of an active-duty member of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), identified as Jairo “N”, accused of abusing a 9-year-old girl in Cozumel. The news generated shock on the island, as the minor was allegedly intercepted while selling snacks near the military barracks. The detention was achieved thanks to the swift report from family members and the intervention of local authorities.
Protests and Violence on the Island Following the Detention
Public outrage escalated over the weekend with protests in front of the Military Garrison. Protesters threw stones and caused damage, which led security elements to respond with shots fired into the air to disperse the crowd. A looting was even reported at a convenience store near the military complex.
Cozumel Mayor Blames the Victim's Parents
Amid the crisis, municipal president José Luis Chacón generated controversy by blaming the parents for "leaving the minor alone." "Today it was a big scare, but we cannot allow minors to be out alone selling candy or snacks late at night," the mayor declared. His words were criticized by relatives and advocacy groups, who accused the mayor of revictimizing the girl and diverting responsibility from the authorities.
Testimony from the Mother: Allegations of Cover-Up and Irregularities
The victim's mother stated that authorities manipulated statements and did not guarantee adequate medical attention for the girl, who has head injuries after being thrown from a moving motorcycle. "They made me sign a statement that was arranged. My daughter did not receive a gynecological evaluation or basic studies. I fear this military member will be set free," she denounced in an interview. Furthermore, she held the mayor, the military, and the attorney general's office responsible for any retaliation against her.
Demand for Justice in Cozumel
The community of Cozumel has shown support for the family and is demanding a transparent process. Groups against child violence stated that this case reflects the vulnerability of minors and the urgency of guaranteeing justice without cover-ups. The FGE reported that the military member remains detained and that a judge will determine his legal status in the coming days.
