Mexico City — Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, announced that, according to the World Tourism Barometer from UN Tourism, Mexico has achieved second place among the most visited destinations in the American continent for 2024, with the arrival of 45 million international tourists.
This result places Mexico only behind the United States, which received 72.4 million visitors, and significantly ahead of Canada (19.9 million) and the Dominican Republic (8.5 million).
The secretary highlighted that this positive trend reflects the strategy implemented under the guidelines of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who promotes a form of tourism capable of generating "shared prosperity" and opportunities in every corner of the country.
“The 7.4 percent growth in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year confirms that Mexico is a world power in tourism,” stated Rodríguez Zamora.
According to UN Tourism, the United Nations agency focused on promoting responsible and sustainable tourism, it is estimated that in 2024, Mexico recorded a total of 86.4 million international visitors, representing a significant increase of 15.5 percent compared to 2023.
Furthermore, a 1.5 percent increase in the arrival of tourists by air was observed, reaching 23.2 million, reflecting a growing interest in the country as a safe and diverse tourist destination.
Rodríguez Zamora also mentioned that during the first half of 2025, 23.4 million international tourists arrived in Mexico, already surpassing the number of visitors received by Canada throughout the entirety of 2024.
In this same period, foreign exchange earnings reached $18,680.8 million dollars, an increase of 6.3 percent compared to 2024.
Likewise, cruise tourism showed notable growth, receiving 5.7 million passengers in the first half of 2025, marking a 9.6 percent increase compared to the previous year.
These results not only underscore the strength of the Mexican tourism industry but also contribute to the well-being and economic development of local communities.
