Mexico Breaks Export Record to US Despite Tariff Hikes

Mexico City — Mexico reached a historic high in exports to the United States in May 2026, with sales totaling $54.18 billion, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau released by Mexico’s Economy Ministry.

During the same month, Mexican imports from the U.S. amounted to $33.05 billion. Over the trailing 12 months, Mexican exports rose 8% year-over-year to $558 billion, while imports climbed 7% to $358.9 billion.

The ministry noted that despite higher U.S. tariffs imposed on various countries, Mexico remains the top trading partner of the United States, surpassing Canada, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrattributed the strong performance to Mexico’s preferential access to the U.S. market and said the government’s strategy aims to boost foreign investment and solidify trade relations amid uncertainty surrounding the USMCA.
