Banco Chinchorro, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy rescued seven Cuban nationals who were shipwrecked off the coast of Banco Chinchorro, a protected natural area in Mexico’s Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.

The Navy, working with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas and the National Migration Institute, coordinated the rescue operation after local fishermen first spotted the survivors and brought them to safety. The fishermen handed the group over to park rangers stationed at Banco Chinchorro, who then requested naval assistance for transport.

The seven Cubans had been traveling aboard a small, makeshift vessel when they encountered trouble. Navy medical personnel evaluated the survivors and confirmed they were in good health. A naval patrol boat, the ARM Rasalhague, then transported them to the fishing pier in Mahahual.

Upon arrival in Mahahual, migration officials took charge of the group to begin identification and immigration processing.
