Mexican Navy Officer Shoots Knife-Wielding Man in Chetumal
Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A Mexican Navy officer fatally shot a man who stabbed him during an arrest attempt Thursday in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood, authorities said.
The incident began when residents on Calzada Veracruz called 911 to report an aggressive man wielding a knife and apparently under the influence of drugs, threatening people in the area.
Police and Navy personnel responded and tried to detain the suspect, but he fled across rooftops of nearby businesses. After a chase, officers cornered him. As they moved in, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed a Navy officer, who then fired his weapon, striking the suspect in the abdomen.
The deceased was identified as Visael or Misael Hernández Martínez. He collapsed on the roof of a business called Parripollo and died at the scene.
Emergency responders arrived but found no vital signs. The area was cordoned off for investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office to process the scene and remove the body.
