Law enforcement vehicles and personnel at the scene of a shootout in Limones, Bacalar

Limones, Bacalar, Mexico — Mexican Navy personnel intervened to prevent a kidnapping in the southern Quintana Roo community of Limones on Tuesday, resulting in a shootout that left one person dead and another in custody.

The State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) announced it has opened an investigation into the incident. According to officials, Navy personnel responded to a citizen’s report that occupants of a white Volkswagen vehicle were threatening a person with firearms, apparently with the intent to abduct them.

When Navy officers tracked down the reported vehicle, its occupants opened fire on them. The officers returned fire in accordance with established protocols.

The exchange left one person dead. Authorities arrested another individual at the scene. Officers also seized two firearms and doses of suspected narcotics.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the Navy personnel involved in the confrontation were unharmed, dispelling earlier reports of casualties among their ranks.

Members of an interagency task force are continuing with necessary procedures to clarify the facts of the case and determine legal responsibilities.
