Mexican Navy Seizes Illegal Fishing Boat Near Yucatán Coast

Yucalpetén, Yucatán — The Mexican Navy, through the Ninth Naval Zone, reported that personnel in coordination with the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (Conapesca), the Yucatán Secretariat of Public Security (SSPY), and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) seized a small vessel carrying marine products currently under a fishing ban off the coast of Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatán.

Inspection Leads to Seizure

During a maritime inspection and surveillance patrol, authorities detected a small boat with three crew members transporting approximately 124 kilograms of Mayan octopus, a species currently under a protected fishing period. The vessel, its occupants, and unauthorized fishing equipment were detained as a precautionary measure.

The detained individuals and confiscated materials were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation. The seized marine products were placed under an official chain of custody.

The Mexican Navy emphasized its ongoing collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies to combat illegal fishing and protect marine species under conservation measures in Yucatán.
