The diplomatic strains between Canada and the United States have caused many Canadian tourists to rethink their travel plans. This shift presents a chance for the Mexican Caribbean to attract these tourists and boost visitor numbers.
Miriam Cortes, director of the Quintana Roo Association of Vacation Clubs, highlighted that travel agencies have reported a surge in cancellations from Canadian tourists who were planning to visit the United States. She believes this could offer an opportunity for the Mexican Caribbean, a key market for Canadian travelers.
The controversies surrounding the economic and trade policies of the United States have swayed the travel choices of Canadians. Given their geographical proximity and cultural affinity, Mexico could serve as an appealing alternative. Therefore, tourism promotion will play a crucial role in drawing them in.
The Secretary of Tourism reports that in 2024, Canadian tourists accounted for 13.9% of all visitors to Quintana Roo, making it the second most significant international market after the United States, which represented 35.6%.
Rodrigo de la Peña, president of the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, anticipates that with the right strategies, Quintana Roo could attract up to 5% of the visitors who typically choose the United States. He said, "The recovery of the sector over the past year, along with existing air connectivity, provides us with the opportunity to attract these travelers through targeted tourism promotion campaigns."
Canadian tourists generally travel in the first and last quarters of the year, making these periods ideal for bolstering efforts to attract this market. The United States Travel Association reports that approximately 20.4 million trips are made from Canada to the US each year. However, the introduction of new tariffs and other economic measures are influencing travel decisions, potentially benefiting destinations like the Mexican Caribbean.
