Mexico City — The Mexican Army has activated its first Emergency Response Battalion equipped with anti-drone technology to protect stadiums and strategic installations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The specialized unit will focus on disabling drones used by organized crime groups, which military authorities consider an emerging threat at large-scale events. Officials say criminal organizations have adapted commercial drones for illegal surveillance, transporting prohibited items, and potential attacks.

Captain José Alfredo Lara Álvarez, a communications and electronics engineer with the battalion, explained that the unit operates both mobile and semi-fixed anti-drone systems designed to detect and neutralize unauthorized aircraft.

“The Emergency Response Battalion has mobile and semi-fixed type inhibition systems,” Lara Álvarez said. “With this equipment we can mitigate any aerial threat, any unauthorized drone flying near strategic installations.”

The systems can disable drones at ranges between 1.5 and 2 kilometers depending on terrain conditions. Semi-fixed systems installed in monitoring centers with control screens can detect drones up to 3 kilometers away, while their inhibition range reaches approximately 1.5 kilometers.

Neutralization occurs by completely interrupting the drone’s signal. “We cut communication with both the radio control and the global positioning system,” Lara Álvarez explained. “From that moment, the drone’s action will depend on its internal configuration.” Depending on programming, disabled drones may descend, return to their point of origin, or drift aimlessly.

Portable “rifle-type” equipment operates directionally, with operators aiming at aircraft and triggering a radiofrequency beam that disrupts communication between drones and their controllers.

Security protocols include identifying authorized drones through pre-registered lists. Approved aircraft appear differentiated on monitoring screens, preventing unnecessary interference and allowing operators to concentrate on potential threats.

The battalion’s emblem features symbols representing its capabilities and mission. A map of Mexico signifies the unit’s ability to operate anywhere in national territory during risk situations. Two golden circles represent security areas established during chemical, biological, or radiological emergencies and explosive device deactivation processes.

Gold and black colors reflect personnel readiness to operate day and night, along with the discretion required for their missions. The shield incorporates chemical, biological, and radiological risk symbols alongside a drone figure, representing specialized personnel training and unit tasks.

A central bomb represents the main objective of deactivation squads: neutralizing war material and improvised explosive devices. Above it, a canine footprint recognizes the work of canine units in searching for and locating explosives.

Four stars complete the emblem, symbolizing the battalion’s important work supporting high command security and its operational dependence through the Joint Chiefs of Staff of National Defense. The motto “Valor, Temple and Skill” summarizes the principles distinguishing members of this unique unit.
