Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Two people diagnosed with measles are hospitalized at the IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Playa del Carmen, marking the first cases of the year in Quintana Roo as a national outbreak spreads.
Unofficial reports identify the patients as a 24-year-old woman and a five-year-old boy. Sources indicate they were hospitalized after traveling to Chiapas late last year. It is unclear whether they are related or have any personal connection.
Both patients are under medical treatment and observation, but their current health status remains undisclosed.
The Quintana Roo Health Department (SESA) has not confirmed this information, but officials are expected to provide an update soon on the state’s status amid the outbreak.
According to the Health Department’s daily measles outbreak report as of January 27, 2026, Mexico has recorded 7,674 confirmed cases and 26 deaths nationwide. Infections are widespread across most states, particularly in Jalisco, Michoacán, Mexico City, Chiapas, and Sinaloa.
On February 2, the Health Department confirmed that Quintana Roo had no measles cases. The latest epidemiological report, dated January 30, shows only 16 suspected cases in the state, all ruled out after laboratory testing.
Earlier this month, unofficial reports suggested that twin babies in Chetumal were hospitalized with measles symptoms, but this has not been confirmed.
