Nicolás Bravo, Quintana Roo — A market built with over 100 million pesos (approximately $5.2 million) to boost the local economy near the Maya Train sits abandoned and deteriorating, with no opening date in sight, leaving artisans and producers waiting for promised opportunities.
The Maya Wellbeing Market, located less than a kilometer from the Maya Train station and three kilometers from the town of Nicolás Bravo, was conceived as a cultural and economic hub. It features 38 stalls, including 10 food outlets, aimed at promoting local artisans, producers, and traditional cuisine while sharing in the prosperity expected from the train project.
Authorities from the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu) have acknowledged the market’s strategic importance for commerce and tourism. They stated that making the facility available to the community is a priority, recognizing the significant benefits it could bring to residents.
However, the market remains closed, with its infrastructure showing signs of wear over time. Community members express frustration, noting that while official rhetoric focuses on future benefits, the reality is a completed project that should already be operational.
Each day the market stays shut, the project loses value, and public confidence wanes, highlighting bureaucratic delays that undermine local economic prospects.
